New York City:
We highly recommend taking the train from Maplewood into New York rather than attempting to drive and park in Manhattan.
The walk from the house to the train station in the village takes about 15 minutes and is through a very pleasant, pretty, quiet, and safe, residential area.
If you have a car, there is free street parking in Maplewood should you wish to drive to the station – do note that close parking spots are tough to find before 10am as some spaces are “permit only” until after the morning rush.
If you are leaving the house in the morning, we suggest taking the town shuttle bus that will pick you up in front of the house (The fare is $1, exact change, paid to the driver when you board.) The “Jitney” shuttle bus operates to coordinate with commuter trains to and from New York and Hoboken, NJ (If you wish to connect to the PATH subway trains or take the ferry downtown).
Morning departures from the bus stop in front of the house (right across the street -there is a little “Jitney Stop” sign) to the Train Station are: 6:09, 6:47, 7:22, 7:52, 8:18 & 8:151am. The bus ride takes 4-5 minutes.
(note: The schedule changes frequently (by a few minutes on either side) and the travel time runs between 24 and 42 minutes, depending on the train time and the current monthly schedule of stops.)
The train fare from Maplewood to New York Penn station is $9.75 Round-Trip ($5.75 one-way for peak, rush-hour trains) Children are half price (4 and under are free) . Alternatively, you can purchase an unlimited ride, weekly pass for $50.50
For your return trip:
If you do not feel like walking home, evening departure times on the “Hilton Jitney” from the Maplewood train station to the house by shuttle bus are: 5:25, 5:54, 6:25, 6:52, 7:22, 7:51 & 8:34pm. The bus will drop you off in front of the house. Alternatively, you can also call a taxi to meet you at the station.
